SUMMARY:Hastings Old Town Carnival Week
DESCRIPTION:Home » Events » Cultural & Traditional Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout\nHastings Old Town Carnival Week takes place every summer in the Old Town of Hastings\, East Sussex. \n  \nAugust Celebrations in Hastings Old Town\nThe carnival week usually happens during the first week of August. Winkle Island officially opens the celebrations. During the week\, organisers host concerts\, street parties\, charity races and Morris dancing. Participants join the Old Town Carnival procession\, which features floats\, dancers\, majorettes and marching bands. The evening ends with a firework display. \n  \nHistory of the Carnival (Since 1968)\nThe carnival began in 1968. Old Town residents felt that the original Hastings Carnival should have included the Old Town in its route\, so they created their own event. Over time\, the Old Town carnival grew bigger and more popular\, while the Hastings carnival declined and eventually stopped. As a parting gesture\, the organisers gave the Carnival Queen the title “Miss Hastings.” In 2018\, they rebranded the Carnival Court as the Sea Court and added a King\, who holds the title “Mr Hastings.” \n  \nFireworks Over the English Channel\nThe week concludes with a spectacular firework display over the waters of the English Channel. Bright colours fill the night sky and reflect on the sea. The display impresses both first-time visitors and long-time carnival fans. \n\n\n\n\n\nOld Town Carnival – Procession Route Map & Event Locations \n\n\nEvent Information\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation

SUMMARY:Lewes Bonfire
DESCRIPTION:Home » Events » Cultural & Traditional Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout\nEvery year on 5 November\, the historic town of Lewes hosts one of the UK’s most famous Bonfire Night celebrations. Known as the “Bonfire Capital of the World”\, Lewes Bonfire attracts thousands of visitors who come to experience its torchlit processions\, dramatic fireworks\, traditional costumes\, and centuries-old Sussex customs. \n \nHistory of Lewes Bonfire Night\nDating back over 400 years\, the event commemorates both the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605 and the 17 Protestant martyrs burned at the stake in Lewes during the Marian persecutions. Today\, six local bonfire societies parade through the town carrying flaming torches\, burning crosses\, banners\, and elaborate effigies before heading to individual bonfire sites for fireworks and celebrations. \n  \nTorchlit Processions and Fireworks Display\nThe atmosphere is unlike any other bonfire night event in Britain. Visitors can expect packed streets\, marching drums\, firecrackers and spectacular fire displays throughout the evening. The grand processions usually begin in the early evening\, with bonfires and fireworks continuing until around 11pm. For a full overview of routes and viewing points\, see the Interactive Map below. \n  \nTravel Advice and Event Restrictions\nBecause bonfire night is so popular\, travel restrictions and road closures are put in place every year.
