SUMMARY:Lewes Bonfire Night
DESCRIPTION:Home » Events » Page 3\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvery year on 5 November\, the historic town of Lewes hosts one of the UK’s most famous Bonfire Night celebrations. Known as the “Bonfire Capital of the World”\, Lewes Bonfire Night attracts thousands of visitors who come to experience its torchlit processions\, dramatic fireworks\, traditional costumes\, and centuries-old Sussex customs. \nDating back over 400 years\, the event commemorates both the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605 and the 17 Protestant martyrs burned at the stake in Lewes during the Marian persecutions. Today\, six local bonfire societies parade through the town carrying flaming torches\, burning crosses\, banners\, and elaborate effigies before heading to individual bonfire sites for fireworks and celebrations. \nThe atmosphere is unlike any other Bonfire Night event in Britain. Visitors can expect packed streets\, marching drums\, firecrackers\, and spectacular fire displays throughout the evening. The grand processions usually begin in the early evening\, with bonfires and fireworks continuing until around 11pm. \nBecause bonfire night is so popular\, travel restrictions and road closures are put in place every year. Organisers strongly advise planning ahead\, as trains\, parking\, and accommodation become extremely limited. \nFor guests staying at Apollo Guest House in nearby Hastings\, Lewes Bonfire Night makes an unforgettable autumn day trip and a chance to experience one of Sussex’s most iconic annual traditions.

SUMMARY:Jack In The Green
DESCRIPTION:Home » Events » Page 3\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJack in the Green is a traditional May Day celebration that began in England\, especially in southern counties such as Sussex and Kent. This vibrant event blends ancient pagan customs with later Christian traditions. \nHastings hosts the largest festival of its kind in the country. It usually takes place on the first weekend of May and draws crowds of locals and visitors. The towering Jack in the Green figure leads the parade\, covered in lush greenery. Morris dancers\, musicians and revellers adorned in fresh foliage accompany him through the streets. \nA unique feature of the Hastings celebration is the “Rising of the Jack.” On the morning of May Day\, performers “awaken” the effigy during a ceremony at the Fishermen’s Museum. Enthusiastic onlookers attend the ritual\, which signals the start of the day’s festivities. \nAt its core\, the festival celebrates the arrival of spring and the renewal of nature. London milkmaids and chimney sweeps likely began the Jack in the Green tradition in the 17th century. The central figure resembles a walking tree or bush and musicians\, dancers and revelers follow him in the procession. People often link Jack in the Green with the Green Man\, a symbol of rebirth and growth. \n  \nThis is an extremely popular event so please BOOK YOUR ACCOMMODATION EARLY to avoid disappointment. \nPlease check dates & times of events with the organisers. We cannot be held responsible for alteration or cancellation of any events.
