About
The Caplin Hastings International Chess Congress celebrates its landmark 100th edition this year, running from 28th December to 5th January 2027.
The World’s Longest-Running Chess Congress
As the world’s longest-running traditional chess congress, this annual tournament dates back to 1895 and remains a major highlight for the town. The main event is the Hastings Premier, which has historically featured 10 to 16 players in a round-robin format. In recent years, the tournament has also incorporated knockout and Swiss systems.
International Players and Championship Heritage
Alongside the Premier, the Congress includes a Challengers section open to all players, with the winner earning an invitation to the following year’s Premier. The event regularly attracts competitors from over thirty countries. Remarkably, almost every World Champion—except Bobby Fischer and Garry Kasparov—has played in Hastings.
Hastings Chess Club and Local History
Chess has a long and proud heritage in the town. Hastings Chess Club, founded in 1882, continues to play an important role in the local community and reflects the enduring popularity of the game here. The club is located at 2 Cornwallis Terrace, Hastings.
A Major Event for Hastings and Local Businesses
With support from Hastings Borough Council, the Congress brings global attention to the town, drawing spectators from as far afield as Singapore and New Zealand and providing a valuable boost to local businesses.
