November 7 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm

About
Battle Bonfire is one of the most spectacular bonfire celebrations in East Sussex. It attracts thousands of visitors to the historic town every November. The Battel Bonfire Boyes organise the event. Many regard it as one of Sussex’s most famous bonfire nights. It is also believed to be the world’s oldest bonfire tradition, with celebrations dating back to 1646.
Battle Bonfire Procession and Fireworks
The highlight of the evening is the famous torchlit procession through the streets of Battle. Thousands of spectators line the High Street to watch members of the Battel Bonfire Boyes. Visiting Sussex bonfire societies also join the procession. They march through the town carrying flaming torches.
Traditional costumes, drummers, flaming crosses and fire displays create a unique atmosphere. The procession finishes at Abbey Green, where organisers light the bonfire. The evening ends with a spectacular fireworks display over Battle.
A Historic Sussex Tradition
Battle Bonfire began as a celebration of the failure of the Gunpowder Plot. Historical records show that people held “gunpowder treason rejoicing” in Battle during the 17th century. The tradition has continued ever since.
The Battel Bonfire Boyes also preserve one of the event’s most unusual attractions. They display the world’s oldest known Guy Fawkes effigy. Craftsmen carved it from pearwood in the late eighteenth century, and the society preserves it for the celebrations.
Plan Your Visit
Battle Bonfire is free to attend and regularly attracts crowds of up to 20,000 people. Visitors are advised to arrive early as road closures and large crowds are expected throughout the evening. The event is one of the highlights of the Sussex bonfire season and offers a memorable experience for anyone interested in local traditions, history and spectacular fireworks.
