About

Rye Bonfire is one of the most famous Bonfire Night celebrations in Sussex. It attracts thousands of visitors each year. The Rye & District Bonfire Society organises the event. It features a torchlit procession, the town’s famous burning boat ceremony, a large bonfire and a spectacular fireworks display.

The event showcases strong Sussex bonfire traditions. Marching societies, flaming torches, drums and costumed participants fill the streets of Rye.

The Burning Boat Tradition

The burning boat sits at the centre of Rye Bonfire Night. This tradition defines the event and sets it apart from other Bonfire Night celebrations in the UK.

As darkness falls, organisers set the boat alight at The Salts. Crowds gather to watch one of the most dramatic spectacles in the Sussex bonfire calendar.

The tradition symbolises Rye and continues to attract visitors from across the South East each year.

Procession, Bonfire and Fireworks

The Rye Bonfire procession begins in the Old Town. Bonfire societies from across Sussex gather before moving through the historic streets of Rye.

Expect a torchlit parade featuring flaming torches, drums and traditional bonfire pageantry.

Procession time: Approximately 19:00.

The procession winds through the town and finishes at The Salts.

At The Salts, organisers light the bonfire followed by a spectacular fireworks display over Rye.

Bonfire & fireworks time: From approximately 21:00.
