Battle Bonfire is one of East Sussex’s most iconic annual events. Every November, thousands of visitors travel to the historic town of Battle to watch the spectacular celebrations organised by the Battel Bonfire Boyes. Many people regard it as the world’s oldest bonfire tradition, with records dating back to 1646.
The Origins of Battle Bonfire
The event began as a celebration of the failure of the Gunpowder Plot. Records from St Mary the Virgin Church mention payments for “gunpowder treason rejoicing” during the 17th century. Over time, Battle Bonfire grew into one of Sussex’s best-known Guy Fawkes celebrations. The event combines local history, political satire, elaborate costumes and dramatic fire processions.
Battle Bonfire Torchlit Procession
Today, as many as 20,000 spectators line the streets to watch the torchlit parade, flaming crosses, traditional Saxon costumes and huge fireworks display. One of the event’s most unusual attractions is the world’s oldest known Guy Fawkes effigy. Craftsmen carved it from pearwood around 1795, and the society preserves it throughout the year.
