Lewes Bonfire Night

About

Experience Lewes Bonfire, one of the UK’s most famous Bonfire Night celebrations, held every year on 5 November in the historic East Sussex town of Lewes. Known as the “Bonfire Capital of the World”, this spectacular event features torchlit processions, traditional costumes, fireworks and centuries-old Sussex traditions.

A Historic Sussex Bonfire Night Tradition

Dating back over 400 years, the event commemorates both the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 and the 17 Protestant martyrs from Lewes who were executed during the Marian persecutions. Today, local bonfire societies bring the town to life with dramatic processions, flaming torches, banners and spectacular displays.

Torchlit Processions and Fireworks Display

The atmosphere is unlike any other Bonfire Night event in Britain. Visitors can expect packed streets, marching drums, firecrackers and spectacular fire displays throughout the evening. The grand processions usually begin in the early evening, with bonfires and fireworks continuing until around 11pm. For a full overview of procession routes and viewing points, see the Interactive Map below.
